THE DAY

WHAT THE DAY LOOKS LIKE

Two castles and alpine lakes

The classic Bavarian day, done privately and in an order designed to avoid the worst of the crowds. Neuschwanstein and Linderhof in one smooth loop, with alpine water stops along the way: Ammersee in the morning light, Forggensee beneath the castle, and Plansee just across the Austrian border where almost nobody stops.

Neuschwanstein

The fairy-tale castle that inspired Disney. We time the drive so you arrive at your entry slot rather than queue for it, and we walk up to Marienbrücke for the view everyone recognises. The Museum of the Bavarian Kings and a boat on the Alpsee are there if you want them.

Linderhof

Ludwig II's smallest and most personal palace — gilded rooms, baroque gardens, and a fraction of the crowd at Neuschwanstein. This is the one he actually lived in.

Füssen and the road home

Medieval arcades in Füssen, a quiet lake across the Austrian border, and dinner in Oberammergau — the village painted with fairy tales — before the quiet drive back to Munich.

A fixed route, on purpose

This is the one day we do not rearrange: the castle entry slots and the border crossing need the order they have. Everything else, as always, moves with you.

CHOOSE YOUR AFTERNOON

This is where a private day earns its price. Depending on how you feel by lunchtime, we pick one together.

THE ROUTE

HOW THE DAY RUNS

Munich → Ammersee → Neuschwanstein → Füssen & Plansee → Linderhof → Ettal Abbey → Oberammergau → Munich

• Pick-up at your hotel or apartment in Munich.

• Ammersee and Forggensee — two alpine lakes with the mountains behind them, in the morning light.

• Neuschwanstein — the interior tour, the walk to Marienbrücke, and the stories about Ludwig II that are not in the guidebooks. Entry ticket extra.

• Füssen and Plansee — medieval streets, then across into Austria to one of the least crowded lakes in the Alps.

• Linderhof Palace — the palace Ludwig actually lived in, with far fewer people. Entry ticket extra.

• Ettal Abbey — a Benedictine monastery from 1330 under a baroque dome, twenty minutes well spent.

• Oberammergau — dinner in Bavaria's painted village.

• Back in Munich — door-to-door, in the evening.

BEFORE YOU COME

MEETING POINT

Door-to-door. We collect you from any hotel or apartment in the Munich city area and bring you back to the same address. The exact pick-up time we agree with you personally.

WHAT TO BRING

• Comfortable shoes — there is a walk up to the castle and on to Marienbrücke

• A warm layer

• Sunglasses

• Your passport or ID: the day crosses into Austria

KNOW BEFORE YOU BOOK

Neuschwanstein offers timed-entry tickets in both English and German, which tend to sell out very quickly—especially during peak seasons. While we are usually happy to help purchase them for you, we cannot guarantee interior castle admission due to frequent ticket shortages.

Please also note that the famous Marienbrücke (Queen Mary's Bridge) is occasionally closed during the winter months or after heavy storms.

Finally, be prepared for a bit of walking: it is a steady 20-minute uphill walk from the parking area up to the castle, along with some additional inclines and declines around the site.

NOT ALLOWED

• Pets

• Alcohol in the vehicle

CANCELLATION

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start. Inside 24 hours a €150 fee applies.
