THE DAY
WHAT THE DAY LOOKS LIKE
The village the violins come from
Mittenwald sits directly under the Karwendel wall, an hour and a half south of Munich, and it is one of the few alpine villages that still makes what made it famous. Violins have been built here since the seventeenth century. The fronts of the old houses are painted from the doorstep to the roof, and the workshops are still working.
The morning
We walk the Obermarkt and the old streets, look into the violin museum, and go into the parish church with Matthias Klotz standing in front of it. If the sky is clear we take the Karwendelbahn up to 2,244 m, where the viewing platform hangs out over the valley.
The afternoon, as you like it
Lautersee and Ferchensee lie a short drive and a shorter walk above the Obermarkt — quiet, green, and almost always empty compared with the famous ones. If you would rather have falling water than still water, the Lainbach waterfall at Benediktbeuern sits on the road home instead. Both are optional, and we decide on the day.
The road home
We do not take the motorway back. The Kesselberg road runs between Walchensee and Kochelsee, two lakes so wide and so blue that people mistake them for the sea, and we stop wherever the view earns it.
